DC Comics has remade the entire DC Universe by creating 52 absolutely new comic book issues that carry the number one. They are also releasing a simultaneous digital and print distribution. The entire hubbub is designed to snag new readers as well as steal those who’ve loved comic books for some time away from Marvel. This event took place in a slow trickle throughout the month of September. DC is billing these new issues as more reader friendly versions because new readers should have no trouble identifying the main character, understanding the story line or have a need to be familiar with characters and stories from previous comic book issues.
Most people remember comic books from childhood, but very few but the avid collectors have brought them along in to adulthood. DC’s new 52 comic books have succeeded in bringing comic books, which have always been around, back in to the limelight. With the launch and the huge amounts of press coverage each of the new comic books have sold out and are now in second printing. The comic Justice League has sold over 200,000 copies and is now in its fourth printing. Batgirl and Action Comics are now in their third printings. DC is making history with this comic book series. And they are also making a bid to save the comic book industry.
Basically The New 52 is a redesign of DC’s iconic superheroes like Batman, the Flash, Green Lantern, Aqua man and Superman. All are getting new costumes and all the books are getting issue #1 applied. And the comic books have gone back to a kinder and gentler time when superheroes simply punched out the bad guys and saved earth. These books get rid of the stupid stuff that has been going on with comic books for decades with different versions of Earth, different iterations of Superheroes and the like. This new series will get rid of all that and the reader will know that the hero is simply on Earth fighting the bad guy. Everything has been simplified.
According to DC Comics, the company wants to accomplish many things with these comic books: they want to draw in new comic readers who have never picked up a book, they want to increase comic book sales in the world, and they want to bring back the casual reader who just might come back and be a serious collector with the birth of this new series. And DC is releasing Same Day Digital along with the release of the books. Fans can now buy comic books for their iPad, laptop or tablet the same day that the hard copy comics hit the street.
