It’s a light week here at New Release Reviews. As promised in last week’s article, we’re going to look at a few new Graphic Novels that we passed over for time constraints. Titles are scored on a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being the very best possible. We take the time to read these books so your time isn’t wasted.
Mass Effect – Issue 4 (of 4)
Honestly, this issue is more of the same from the prior issues in this mini-series. And that’s not a good thing. It started off alright with a fairly attractive cover that promises alien excitement. Even the interior images, though not as good as the cover, are adequate.
Sadly, the story drags the over-all book down. It’s bland and emotionless with no clear protagonist. Even though control of the station is the clear stakes, there is little obvious motivation for all the of the characters who seem to be fighting to the death. The best (or worst) thing I can say is it’s unmemorable.
Score: 4.5 out of 10
Conan: Road Of Kings– Issue 12 (of 12)
This issue was a drop off from prior issues in that there wasn’t much story to it. It sort of seemed like half of a normal issue’s story stretched out into a full issue. Most times this happens it comes across more as filler and you wonder why you paid $3.50.
The artwork is just OK. And Conan is a very nuanced character which is refreshing. Even the supporting characters are unusual and multidimensional. Interesting that this was the end of this maxi-series and it leads into the next one entitled Queen Of The Black Coast. There is a fantastic little preview in the back of the book. Also included were some thoughts on the project by the creative team which were touching.
Score: 7 out of 10
